Photographer of The Week

 Edward Weston

Early Life:

Edward Weston was born March 24th, 1986. He is best known for his images of natural forms, landscape, and nudes. Edward was born into a family where his father was a medical doctor and his grandfather was professor of literature, but he did not find interest in books and did not finish high school. At age 16, he got his first camera as a gift from his father. Edward went to Illinois College of Photography and when he graduated in 1911, he moved to California where he spent most of his life.

Early Life:

By his mid 30’s, Edward was a skilled portrait Photographer working in the Los Angeles suburb of Glenvill. His works in the mid 1920’s he worked at a photographic salon. His works were better-constructed versions of the standard fare of those who worked in the Pictorialism style. Pictorialism style deals with photographers' limited paintings by suppressing detail. Edward also worked on manipulating images in a darkroom, and also did traditional painting subjects such as romantic marine scenes, pastoral landscapes, still life's, nudes, and children and pets. In addition to growing his photography business, Weston also read photography journals and began writing essays for publishers such as American Photography and Photo-Miniature. Within six years of starting his own business, Edwards style began to shift from painterly, soft focus of pictorialism to more sharply focused, crisp photos.

Late Life:

Edwards' work from 1937 and 1938 continued to explore the possibilities of straight photography. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, becoming the first photographer to receive the award. Edward used his funds through this award to travel to the American Southwest where he met Charls Wilson who later became his second wife. Even Though Charls was not a photographer, she still promoted Edwards' work through her writing. Towards the end of his life he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and died on January 1st, 1958.
